Abu Huthaifa al-Batawi was an al-Qaeda leader known by his nickname The Emir of Baghdad  was shot. and killed.. Al-Batawi was the leader of the Islamic State of Iraq, al-Qaeda's front group in Baghdad, an umbrella group of Sunni Muslim extremist organizations. Al-Batawi was accused of being the mastermind of an October 31, 2010 Baghdad church attack in which 68 individuals, including seven security force members died. His al-Qaeda faction was also accused of being behind bombings against the Al Arabiya television station's Baghdad bureau, and a series of attacks on Baghdad's central banks which left more than two dozen people dead.

Details of attempted jailbreak

On May 8, 2011, in a Baghdad prison mutiny, al-Batawi overpowered a police lieutenant who was leading him to an interrogation room, taking his weapon and shooting him dead. Al-Batawi had been unshackled for interrogation. He then freed a number of other prisoners associated along with him in the church massacre, and then killed Iraqi Brigadier General Moayeh al-Saleh--the head of Counter-terrorism for Baghdad's central Karrada district-- in an office. Another inmate charged into a second room, killing the guard and taking his weapon, which suggests that a coordinated jailbreak attempt had been planned. Other inmates seized hand grenades, an assault rifle and three other guns. Al-Batawi killed six police officials overall. Al-Batawi and a group of followers then attempted to flee the prison grounds in a police vehicle but were shot dead by a prison guard. 11 detainees were killed overall. Eight police officers and six detainees were also wounded during the siege.^{[4] [5]}
